Jurist Navi Pillay, a prominent figure in the international legal arena, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. According to Maariv, the prize is awarded in recognition of her sustained contribution to international law and global peace. A native of South Africa, Pillay began her professional journey in the struggle against apartheid, becoming the first Black woman to open a law firm in the Natal province. Throughout her career, she represented dissidents and secured the rights of political prisoners, laying the groundwork for a career that reached the world's highest courts.

In 2003, Pillay was elected as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, serving in the Appeals Chamber until 2008. She was later appointed as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, a role she held until 2014. Maariv emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between her terms, as Pillay was not a judge at the ICC during the initiation of the investigations concerning Israel and the Palestinians, as those proceedings began years after her tenure.

However, Pillay's name has been intensively linked to the Israeli context over the last decade. In July 2021, the president of the UN Human Rights Council appointed her to head an independent international commission of inquiry, mandated to investigate violations of human rights and humanitarian law in the Palestinian territories and Israel. The commission, under her leadership, issued reports perceived as controversial by Israel, which claimed the body was politically biased.

In a 2022 report, the commission stated that the Israeli presence in the territories had become illegal. Following October 7, the commission expanded its work, criticizing Hamas operations alongside those of Israel in the Gaza Strip, attributing war crimes to both sides. Israel has consistently refused to cooperate with the commission, asserting that it does not believe the body is capable of providing equitable and non-discriminatory treatment. Israeli objections have focused on the composition of the commission, its broad, open-ended mandate, and a methodology that Israeli officials argue was flawed.

The prestigious prize, which includes a cash grant of approximately $1. 2 million, will be presented to Pillay at a formal ceremony in Oslo this December. This award joins a long list of Pillay’s legal achievements, while simultaneously continuing to fuel active debate in the diplomatic and legal spheres regarding the role of international commissions of inquiry in relations between Israel and the international community.
