A serious case involving traffic and criminal offenses has come to public attention following the arrest of an 18-year-old resident of Bir al-Maksur for involvement in a severe accident. According to reports from the 'Walla' website, the suspect was arrested by officers of the Galilee District after allegedly riding a T-MAX scooter inside a playground, striking two 8-year-old children who were playing at the site. The accident occurred on the evening of June 30th, with allegations that the teen was riding without ever having held a driver's license.
As a result of the impact, the children sustained serious injuries; reports indicate that one of the victims is currently undergoing a long rehabilitation process and is forced to use a wheelchair. Immediately after the accident, the driver allegedly fled the scene to evade criminal liability. Furthermore, police have accused him and another individual, a 22-year-old relative, of attempted obstruction of justice. It is alleged that the two hid the scooter at a structure belonging to the relative and dismantled the vehicle into parts to destroy evidence.
During enforcement and arrest operations led by Chief Inspector Roni Hinawi of the Galilee District Traffic Department, forces raided the suspect's home. During the search, in addition to the dismantled scooter parts, officers seized ammunition. Both individuals were brought before a judge at the Haifa Magistrate's Court, where the police filed a request to extend their detention. The court granted the request and ordered that both remain in custody until this coming Sunday.
Chief Inspector Roni Hinawi emphasized the severity of the offenses, noting that the police are working with determination to enforce regulations against illegal use of two-wheeled vehicles and against those who attempt to tamper with crime scenes and impede judicial proceedings. It is important to note that these are allegations only, and the legal status of the suspects has not yet been determined; they are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
