Thai law enforcement authorities have carried out large-scale raids on three sites affiliated with the Jewish community and Chabad institutions in Bangkok, as part of a complex investigation into the ownership structure of assets and businesses held by Israeli citizens. According to reports, over ten government bodies participated in the enforcement operation, including local police, the Revenue Department, the Immigration Bureau, the Anti-Money Laundering Office, and the Land Department.
Officials stated that the investigation focuses on identifying the true controlling parties of companies and properties, against the backdrop of strict Thai laws that significantly restrict foreign ownership of businesses and land. According to the Thai Ministry of Justice, there is suspicion that local citizens were used as nominees to circumvent these restrictions. In this context, investigators are deeply examining funding sources, the operations of various companies, and the validity of citizenship processes granted to some of those involved.
During the raids, institutions such as the Chabad Foundation of Bangkok, the Chabad kindergarten, the Jewish Association of Thailand, and the "Beit Elisheva" construction site were inspected. During the activity, authorities identified several foreign workers from neighboring countries, including Myanmar and Laos, who were allegedly employed without proper permits and were staying in the country without valid documentation. Legal proceedings have been initiated against the employers of these workers, and the employees themselves face potential deportation.
Conversely, the Jewish community and its leadership dispute the authorities' claims. Rabbi Nechemia Wilhelm, Chabad emissary in Bangkok, refuted allegations regarding a link between the organization and the companies under investigation. He stated that the documents found at the community institution belong to an independent accounting firm that provides services to a variety of clients and that its actions should not be construed as proof of an organizational or business connection to Chabad institutions.
This process is generating significant repercussions due to its legal and media sensitivity, as Thai authorities continue to intensify investigations into foreign entities operating in the country. It should be emphasized that at this stage, these are allegations and suspicions under review by local law enforcement, which have yet to be adjudicated in court.
