Israel's Supreme Court today (Tuesday) heard a petition filed by the "Democrats" party against the decision not to provide security for the party's chairman, Yair Golan. The petition was filed after the Advisory Committee on Political Appointments did not recommend security for Golan, and after the Ministerial Committee on Shin Bet Affairs transferred the decision on the matter to Shin Bet head David Zini. The petition was directed against Zini, the Ministerial Committee on Shin Bet Affairs, and the Israeli government, alleging that Golan should be secured due to a high threat assessment.

According to the claims, the police classified the threat level against Golan as 4 out of 6, and hundreds of examples of severe threats to his life were attached to the petition. Upon filing the petition, the Supreme Court ordered the Shin Bet head, the Ministerial Committee, and the government to reconsider the need for security based on the updated threat assessment and to update the court. During the hearing, the presiding judge, Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit, told the party's representative that, "We have a professional body whose expertise is in this matter, and we will not intervene.

" Accordingly, President Amit suggested the party withdraw the petition. The Supreme Court President emphasized that the issue raised was significant and that the court was "concerned about the problem. " He added that the Shin Bet would continue to advise the police based on information provided to it, that the Shin Bet could assist the party with the police in specific incidents, and that the service conducts ongoing activity regarding personal security. In response to the judge's remarks, the "Democrats" party representative replied that, "The response does not allow us to conduct an election campaign. "
