The Department of Internal Police Investigations (DII) has launched an intensive investigation into a fatal shooting in Umm al-Fahm, which resulted in the death of local resident Alaa Mahamid. The tragic incident began when a motorcycle unit from the Border Police Tactical Brigade was operating near Highway 65. According to the police statement, officers spotted a vehicle that aroused suspicion and ordered it to stop, but the driver fled. Police claim that after the suspect was apprehended following a pursuit, a confrontation ensued in which Mahamid allegedly exited his vehicle and attacked one of the officers.
The officer, citing a perceived immediate threat to his life, fired at Mahamid, resulting in his death before medical teams could arrive. The deceased's family stated that he suffered from mental health issues and had been hospitalized at the Sha'ar Menashe Mental Health Center in the past. Reports suggest the deceased managed to escape from the forces after being detained and handcuffed earlier in the incident, a fact that raises questions regarding the sequence of events.
Following the incident, DII investigators arrived at the scene to examine the circumstances. As part of the process, the officer who fired the shots was brought in for questioning under caution on suspicion of causing Mahamid's death. Upon completion of the questioning, the officer was released to five days of house arrest. Furthermore, he was issued restrictive conditions, including a two-week ban from all police stations and a 30-day prohibition from entering Umm al-Fahm.
Currently, the DII is examining the sequence of events to determine whether the shooting complied with standard operating procedures and if alternative enforcement measures were available, particularly in light of claims regarding the deceased’s mental health. It is important to note that these are allegations under investigation and the legal process has not yet concluded. For the general public, this incident underscores the importance of reviewing law enforcement procedures during complex encounters involving suspects with mental health backgrounds and highlights the role of oversight bodies in cases of lethal force.
