The police prosecution has filed an indictment in court against a 26-year-old resident of Bnei Brak, following a violent incident during a political meeting held by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in the city. According to reports from the Ice website, the incident occurred on September 24 at a restaurant on Metzada Street, when the defendant allegedly threw a glass salt shaker toward Bennett's table. According to police information, the salt shaker struck two women employed by Bennett. Later in the event, the suspect allegedly threw another glass object that landed near the table.
Police forces from the Bnei Brak-Ramat Gan station and Border Police officers present at the scene arrested the suspect immediately and transferred him for questioning. The suspect’s detention was extended by the court periodically until the investigation was concluded. The Tel Aviv District prosecution filed an indictment charging the defendant with common assault, attempted common assault, and conduct likely to breach the public peace. Along with the indictment, a request for house arrest pending the completion of proceedings was filed.
Following the incident, Naftali Bennett posted on the X social network, noting that his staff members were injured and stating that he does not intend to be deterred by violence. Bennett emphasized his belief that this involved a violent minority that does not reflect the Haredi public, and that he intends to continue holding meetings across the country. This case highlights the issue of personal security for public officials during their routine public activities. The legal system must now decide on the prosecution's claims and determine the restrictive conditions for the defendant until the trial concludes.
