The State Attorney's Office, through the Zevulun prosecution branch, has filed a serious indictment against a 49-year-old Haifa resident for offenses of assaulting a spouse causing actual bodily harm and threats. The case follows a violent incident that occurred at the family home on September 6, 2026. According to Israel Police reports, Haifa station officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a severe act of domestic violence. The investigation revealed that the defendant allegedly assaulted his wife, causing her physical injuries, with reports suggesting the assault was carried out using, among other things, a phone charging cable.
Police noted that the gravity of the event is compounded by the fact that the assault occurred in the presence of the couple's minor children. Following the incident, the suspect was arrested by station officers and interrogated, during which evidence was collected that established, in the police's view, the evidentiary basis required for the indictment. Throughout the investigation, the defendant's remand was extended periodically by the court. Upon the completion of evidence collection and the filing of the indictment, the prosecution requested that the court order the defendant's detention until the end of legal proceedings, due to his dangerousness and the nature of the attributed offenses.
Chief Inspector Keren Avitan, Head of the Domestic Violence Department at the Haifa station, addressed the handling of the case, stating that the police acted with determination and professionalism from the moment the report was received to protect the victims and ensure justice. It should be clarified that these are allegations detailed in an indictment, and at this stage, the defendant is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty in a criminal proceeding before a competent court.
This case underscores the strict policy of the law enforcement system regarding domestic violence offenses, particularly when committed in the presence of minors. For the public, the case serves as a reminder of immediate police involvement in domestic violence files and the heavy legal risks associated with resorting to violence at home. This case will now be examined within the framework of orderly criminal proceedings in court.
