The Police Investigation Department (PID) filed an indictment this week at the Nazareth Magistrate's Court against three police officers and a police volunteer, all of whom served at the Nazareth station at the time of the incident. The charges include aggravated assault, abuse of public office, and arbitrary actions infringing upon the rights of others. According to a report by NWS, the incident occurred on the night of April 1, 2024, during a routine patrol shift.
According to the indictment, the four observed a vehicle carrying three youths in the village of Mashhad, including a minor. The officers and the volunteer believed the vehicle's occupants had cursed and taunted them, leading them to order the driver to pull over. Upon stopping the vehicle, one of the defendants approached and, without warning, struck one of the passengers in the face and pulled him out while continuing to punch him in the chest. The indictment further alleges that the other defendants then joined the assault, beating the youths with punches and kicks to their bodies. As a result of the violence, two of the youths sustained injuries, including a cut above the eyebrow and an abrasion on the thigh.
The PID further claims that following the assault, one of the defendants conducted a search of the youths' vehicle without legal authority. The case is being handled by the northern team of the PID, and the prosecution has notified the court of its intention to seek prison sentences if the defendants are convicted. It is important to emphasize that these are allegations detailed in an indictment, and the defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
This incident highlights the importance of judicial oversight regarding the conduct of law enforcement in the field and the sensitivity required when allegations of police violence against citizens arise, particularly involving minors and reports of illegal searches. The event may carry significant consequences, both at the criminal level for those involved and at the administrative level regarding their continued service in the police.
