The 'Prinuk' baby puree poisoning case, which caused widespread panic among parents across the country two months ago, has reached a legal turning point. The Israel Police issued an official update stating that the investigation into the grave matter has been concluded. According to the police, working in close cooperation with the Israel Security Agency, a prosecutor's statement is expected to be filed in the coming days against the primary suspect, Yan Shamla, a resident of Be'er Sheva in his 40s.
This is a necessary preliminary step toward filing a full criminal indictment, with the state simultaneously expected to request the suspect's detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings. According to the allegations, Shamla acted to introduce strong sedatives, including those intended for psychiatric treatment in adults, into baby food products purchased at 'Zol Ve-Gadol' branches in Jerusalem. Police claim he returned the poisoned products to the store shelves.
The breakthrough in the investigation was achieved following an intensive review of hundreds of hours of security footage and analysis of data from thousands of customers, until video evidence was located showing the suspect placing the tainted products back on the shelf. Following the incriminating findings, police conducted covert surveillance of the suspect's daily routine to establish a solid evidentiary basis before the open arrest. Furthermore, police state that videos were seized from his personal computer that may directly link him to the alleged acts.
The affair came to light after four toddlers were hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem after consuming the products, with medical tests identifying substances such as clonazepam and lorazepam in their systems. The Ministry of Health subsequently issued a severe consumer warning, and the police launched a manhunt after realizing the acts were intentional rather than an industrial failure. As of now, the motive remains unclear, as the suspect offered confused claims during his interrogation regarding a desire for revenge.
According to reports, investigators have yet to establish a logical motive explaining such a grave act against helpless children. This is a significant development, highlighting the necessity of cooperation between law enforcement and security agencies in solving dangerous crimes within the public sphere.
